National Public Health Week – PCG Thanks All Fire & EMS Agencies!

Author: Michelle Silvestre

Public Consulting Group (PCG) celebrates and promotes National Public Health Week (April 3-9). We thank Fire & Emergency Medical Service (EMS) agencies who play an enormous role in public health efforts. From standing in the front lines of a public health crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, to sharing and collecting data to improve healthcare outcomes, your commitment to serving our community does not go unnoticed. EMS and public health systems are in constant collaboration together to achieve the public health goal of protecting and improving health in our communities.

The EMS system can be utilized as an imperative tool to identify and address trends affecting a population’s health. EMS providers can often see first-hand how social determinants of health (SDoH) impacts the communities they serve. This includes the economic stability, educational opportunities, and healthcare access within their communities. These factors help EMS providers to identify and address numerous public health challenges. For instance, EMS providers may recognize why a patient may refuse to seek preventative care due to a lack of insurance or financial resources. Another example is the impact of the opioid crisis; providers may have a higher level of understanding narcotics and addiction from witnessing how their communities have been affected by this public health emergency.

As we celebrate National Public Health Week, let’s all take a moment to remember- “It will take all of us working together to make the U.S. the healthiest nation” (NPLH.org).
