Working in a management position within a fire or EMS department means facing incredibly challenging issues that are often not fully understood by those responsible for procuring funding (for example, city officials and administrators making budgetary decisions). As administrators, we often look at call volume and unit demand data to translate into operational needs, however, falling short to realize that municipal officials may not make that same correlation. Communication plays a key role in discussions surrounding funding, either leading to misunderstandings and a standstill or, preferably, a better understanding of resource needs and a path forward to alleviating the problems your department is facing.
